If the labor market sent thank-you notes, one would surely end up in Amazon’s mailbox. Today, the online mega-retailer announced via press release that it plans to add more than 100,000 new, full-time, full-benefit jobs across the U.S. over the course of the next 18 months.
Amazon has been a massive job creator in the United States. Over the past five years, the Seattle-based company has created more than 150,000 jobs in the U.S., growing its workforce from 30,000 employees in 2011 to more than 180,000, according to the statement.
As if we didn’t already have enough to thank Amazon for (i.e. grocery deliveries, fire sticks, Kindles and yes, you too, Alexa), this massive uptick in job creation is the latest reason we have to bow down to the almighty e-commerce giant. With this increase in staffing, more than 280,000 people will be able to add a job at Amazon to their resumes by mid-2018.
What is Amazon hiring for exactly? Just like on its e-comm site and corresponding app where you can find just about any item you can possibly dream of, Amazon is ramping up hiring for virtually every type of position.
“These new jobs are for people all across the country and with all types of experience, education and skill levels—from engineers and software developers to those seeking entry-level positions and on-the-job training,” the press release reads.
These jobs aren’t exclusive to Amazon’s Seattle headquarters or its Silicon Valley location, either—though, as the company continues to expand in areas like cloud technology, aerospace and other logistics, you could find yourself in either of those bastions of tech. Amazon says many of the new roles will be in their new fulfillment centers that are currently under construction in Texas, California, Florida, New Jersey and many other states across the country.
But no matter what your job title is at the company, every full-time Amazonian receives full benefits, including health insurance, disability insurance, retirement savings plans and company stock. Amazon also offers up to 20 weeks of paid leave as well as additional PTO benefits for new parents through its “Leave Share” and “Ramp Back” programs. Leave Share lets employees share their Amazon paid leave with their spouse or domestic partner if their spouse’s employer doesn’t offer paid leave. Ramp Back gives new moms additional control over the pace at which they return to work.
A job with Amazon could help you pay for education to bolster your career. Through its “Career Choice” program, Amazon will pay 95% of your tuition, so you can pursue a degree in a high-demand, high-wage occupation, such as aircraft mechanics, computer-aided design, machine tool technologies, medical lab technologies and even nursing, just to name a few.
Oh, and if you’re a veteran, you’ll be in good company at Amazon. More than 10,000 veterans already work there, and last year, the Seattle Times reported that the company pledged to hire and train an additional 25,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years.
