Introduction
It may not be enough to give Information Technology the label of an industry ; it is much more. It encompasses almost all areas of human endeavour. The range of use and dependence varies in different professions , economies and peoples coming from varied socio-economic backgrounds.
The influence of Information Technology is evidently contagious and dependence awesome . Its impact may be recalled when the impending threat of the Y2K bug ushered in this millinium . IT dependent systems and life dependent on these faced threat of a complete fall out . These morbid fears were shortlived. We are living in a new era the Information Technology era. IT superhighways and IT dependent systems are here to stay and grow.
Today IT is for everybody .You may embark upon high tech shopping off the keyboard, have a palmtop for personal information, or survive with a microchip in your heart.
The Ministry of Information Technology responding to the speed of growth of the IT sector has planned adequate growth of the educational facilities. By 2008 there are going to be 2.63 lakh postgraduates including MCA's, 7.85 lakh graduates, 7.42 lakh diploma holders, 10.5 lakh in hardware and 7.5 in IT enabled services. At the higher end we produce only 25 PhDs and 300 M. Techs as compared to 800 Phd and 10,000 postgradutes in the US. Quality institutions will be doubled by next academic year and trippled by 2003-4. 205 government aided institutions will be added to the list. There will be a cluster of 65 institutions, the IITs, IIITs, IIMs, IISc included to share instructional material, coursework, faculty for an integrated approach to IT education.
Nature of Work
Computer Scientists- People who work on the elements of chip design, mathematical modelling, reliability aspects of chip design are the scientists. How a computer is required to respond is what the scientists conceive. The study route is BSc in computers, MSc in computers and a Ph.d in the subject. Those who opt for studying abroad do a BS in Computer Science, MS in Computer Science and a doctoral programme. IIT offers a 5 year programme in Computer Science and Mathematics . This course covers scientific aspects required for chip design.
Computer Engineers- These are the hardware professionals who work on three major areas - Computer manufacture, computer repair and maintenance and System integration.
Information Technologists- Information Technology spans an enormous range of jobs from software designing to consultancy. It is basically about how a computer can be exploited in different fields.
Information Technology has pervaded virtually every sphere of life and hence offers a variety of options. It has the potential to absorb 7 million people by 2008 with software accounting for 2.2 million, hardware sector direct employment 1.6 million and indirect employment of 3.2 million professionals. India has set a target of $50 billion in software exports.
Software engineers/systems programmers - Software designing is a technical task. It involves writing a set of instructions for the operating systems which control the operations of the entire computer system. The job involves research, development and adaptation of application programmes for use with computer systems.
Systems programmers have good technical acumen and knowledge of the parts of a computer and their operations. A degree in computer science and excellent knowledge of computer architecture is required.
Systems programmers are employed with IT end users, computer manufacturers and service centers and also consultancy firms. Systems programmers with telecommunication and database concepts will find many opportunities.
Over 70,000 people join the software sector every year. Jobs will touch 85,000 by 2002 and 2.2 million by 2008.
Systems Analysts- Computerisation within any organisation involves analysing its informational needs and the problems related to it and designing patterns for the flow of information from the data sources to the computer users. The job also involves planning the distribution of information within the organisation which requires discussion with departmental heads to determine their information needs and problems.
Analyst programmers- When computerisation has to replace manual procedures analyst programmers study how work is manually carried on to design and develop computerised processes to replace these manual processes. The job requires excellent analytical skills, the ability to define the elements of a task devise alternative and innovative solutions , and select the best alternative.
The job requires communicating with the various departments in an organisation to design the most efficient flow of information. The academic background required is BE/ Btech/ MCA / M.Tech. Generally programmers with a couple of years experience can upgrade themselves to become analyst programmers.
Application Programmers- When the System Analyst defines a system, a series of logical steps which a computer would do to process information for use have to be written. This involves using programming languages. Application programmers write, debug, and test computer programmes. They work with analyst programmers to follow the guidelines given in the form of flowcharts or tables by Systems analysts.
Consultants- Consultant specialise in one of the many fields eg. optimising computer performance, computer/net security, projects, hardware and software selection and installation, management of database or telecommunications. These are primarily aimed at solving IT related problems of the client. Consultants are experienced professionals with 5-7 years of experience and a postgraduate degree related to computers.
Operators- Data entry operators, Desk Top Publishing Operators, generally have a +2 qualification and a computer certificate/dipoma.
Information Systems Designers- Systems designers design alternative systems as per the system requirements which has been determined by the analyst. In an industry, business, commercial or professional set up computerisation implies that the data stored in the system must have a systems design and application design.
BE/ MCA/ BIS/ MIS are desirable qualification. Software developers and IT end users are potential employers.
Information Systems Managers- Information systems managers provide ready access to decision making information. This is used by the organisational decision makers. Information managers can be from diverse backgrounds such as computer science, physical or social sciences, business, finance, management, engineering etc. Information systems jobs are with IT end users.

Hardware engineers
Business & Industry- Large and medium sized businesses have computer networks . Information sytems professional the responsibility of the smooth flow of data through the computer networks.
Banking & Finance- IT specialists maintain, update financial data and manage the transfer of accounts.
Office & PC- Processing storing and retreival of data and reference information, and business communications requires IT skills. Information Systems professionals oversee these tasks.
Factories - Computerisation has influenced production processes, inventory control and quality management. The operations in high tech sectors is almost completely computerised eg. the medical sector, aviation and space sciences, communications, weather labs while robotic has greatly influenced production in high precision based industries and in industries manufacturing chemical and other products which pose health hazards.
Travel sector- E-ticketing, electronic traffic control, marketing, planning are in things in travel. The latest is digitisation for preparing travel maps.
Medical related- Medical documentation, diagnostic procedures and electronically controlled therapy have been used in medical practice. The backend support professional are new on the scene particularly in India.These are medical transcriptionists.
Architecture planning and Design- CAD has been in use for a long time and is used for designers and architects. The specification and data is fed into the computer and visual modifications, designs and models are created through graphical images.
Scientific Research- Storing, computing, analysis and interpretation of data for scientific work as well as its use in exploration, remote sensing and managing electronically operated equipments, Computer technology and IT skills are required. In exploration on land and water computers are used for locating minerals, studying effects of natural phenomena, studying weather phenomena.
Education - Huge data bases accessible over the net, online education are facts of today. The virtual classroom is a reality.
Defence - Equipments for communication, combat and signals are today electronically operated. Infact the warfare today is a test of a nations hitech electronic capabilities.
DataAnalysis and Interpretation- Artificial Intelligence has made possible logical deductions, interpretations, and judgements on computerised systems.
Robotics- This field has emerged from that of artificial intelligence and it is geared to bring tremendous advancements in the industrial, health, services sectors and the domestic front.
Music- Analysation of notes to the sound effect in concert halls is controlled by the computer.The electronic keyboard, programmable devices, sound production hardware, amplification device, computer system with a display and keyboard, storage device are today revolutionising the concept of music composition and production.
Call Centres- A call centre is a place that has adequate telecom facilities, trained consultants, access to wide database, Internet and other on-line support infrastructure in order to provide information and support to customers on real time basis.
Multimedia- Multimedia involves computing and audiovisual technologies to fuse video, audio, text, graphics, animation etc. in a meaningful way. All these are used to create a real life experience. Web designing and content has a lot to do with multimedia. There are animators, sound technicians, graphic artists, video technitians are multimedia professionals.
Internet - Internet connects computers across the globe through modem which is used for communicating using the telephone line. When many networks are connected across the globe millions of computers can be accessed from any single computer. Internet facility is being used by most Pc users. By 2005 it is expected that there will be 10 million households using this facility.

Dot com careers- You could do your professional job in a dotcom, design webpages, or take up a technical job on the server side. Websites of education, businesses, services, institutions, organisations, agencies provide ready options for work . They operate for the consumer on one end (B2C) and business (B2B) on the other.
Internet Service providers- Internet connection is provided by ISPs. Internet servers require very high uptime to provide user satisfaction. Hardware specialists are hired to maintian uptime. In addition matters relating to system administration, fine tuning performance and net security is looked after by software professionals. Large ISPs employ even telecom specialists to keep the network healthy.
Internet & Telecommunication - Telecom and IT experts world over are working overtime to ensure that union between the two great trends of our times is a great success - Mobile phones and the Internet . People will be able to browse the net on the move , carry out business transactions, make reservation, carry out search for locations, look for a little video clip without the need of the heavy use of the keyboard. IT and telecom companies have sunk in hundreds of millions of dollars to develop platforms, applications, hardware and network systems to enable internet access to mobile phone with ease and speed which will radically change the way people shop do business and entertain themselves. Teleconferencing, Voice on Internet Protocol are other areas where the internet and telecommunications technology merge.

Entry Routes
Computer engineers are post-graduates in microelectronics, computers, production engineering or graduate engineers in electronics, computers.
Research and Development engineers are M. Techs./ Ph.Ds.
Servicing Engineers have experience in repair and maintenance of electronic circuits and microprocessors.
Software engineers must have an engineering degree with post graduate diploma in computer applications.
Systems designers and Analyst Programmer have a Masters in Computer Applications /engineering degree. They are good at programming skills and have experience in systems design.
Systems Analyst are Engineering graduates or graduates in Maths, Business, Physical Sciences, CA with a degree in Computer Science,Information Technology, Information Science, Information Systems or Data Processing.
Application Programming requires graduates in Arts,Science,Commerce, Statistics. They move up to become Analyst programmers with experience.
Operating jobs require Senior secondary qualification, typing skill and training in various software packages as well as englishor regional language skill.
Sales and Marketing professionals are graduates and Degree/Diploma holders in Sales or Marketing. They require good communication skills and must have knowledge of computers.
