You have done your research on the company and you are well aware of what your role is going to be, if and when you get the job. You have gone through numerous interview tips and have prepared for all the obvious questions like ‘tell me about yourself,’ ‘why should we hire you’ and ‘what is your biggest weakness/strength.’ But what about the industry specific question? Are you clueless about what the interviewer is going to ask you about marketing? Not sure on what is Kotler’s definition of marketing! Well, we are here to help you prepare for questions for a marketing interview.
1. Describe a marketing project that you completed within budget and on time.
When you are asked something like this, your answer should throw light on your organization and planning skills that got you a good return while staying within the stipulated budget. Explain in detail what kind of restrictions you faced and how you overcame the situation and practised a different idea that certainly worked. Mention how you adjusted where ever it was essential, and how you used your decision making ability to meet the demands and constraints that came your way.
2. Describe a situation in which an innovate approach was essential.
Explain why you needed a new and innovative approach in a strategy. How you considered the available resources and determined the best course of action. Explain the action in detail and how the innovative approach helped the brand.
3. Give me an example of a marketing campaign that did not work according to your plan.
This question gives you the chance to prove to the interviewer that though you are not perfect, you are open to experimentation and you learn from your mistakes. It is absolutely essential that you understand why a plan failed and what you can learn from that failure. A strategy usually fails because of reasons like lousy groundwork, inadequate research, defective planning, unrecognized goals and careless miscommunication. Think what went wrong with your plan and take responsibility of it and tell them what you learnt from it.
4. Which brand do you think sets itself as an example of good marketing?
Here you should be able to identify the branding, positioning and the target of your favourite brand. In simpler words, who is the brand’s target audience and what are they trying to convey to this audience via their strategy. Mention your understanding of how the brand positions itself in the market using the four P’s – product, place, price and promotion and give examples how each of their P strategy works for them.
5. Which of our products/services most appeals to you and why?
For any interview adequate research on the company is important and you must make sure that you are well aware of the company’s successful products/services. By doing this you will have an understanding of their appeal and how the marketing strategy has worked for them. A good example of how ‘Amul’ has positioned itself as a brand of India and how they connect their brand image via advertisements with the country’s current affairs.
