An interview is one of the best opportunities for a candidate to showcase his/her candidature, and more importantly to stand out as the most suitable candidate. And as we all know, the first impression is the last impression, or the packaging of a product plays an essential role in selling of the product.
The first few seconds is when an impression is formed about you by the interviewer, depending upon your attire and body language. There was a case of a good and suitable candidate for a senior job, but when we got feedback from the interviewer post the interview, the colour combination and casual dressing sense (the candidate had come dressed in casuals) were important factors in the candidate not being considered. More importantly there were other candidates who were equally good and were formally dressed, and they got an edge over this candidate.
Remember that a ‘perception’ is created when you enter the interview room. In reality, you might be a suitable candidate, but if the first impression is not positive, it becomes a challenge to manage the rest of the interview, and somewhere it creates an uncomfortable feeling in the interviewer’s mind, which unfortunately becomes a barrier.
So being formally dressed is always advisable for both males and females. You need not necessarily wear branded and expensive clothes, but clothes should be neatly ironed and the overall attire formal. A tie and blazer is preferred for males and similar formal attire for females. In case the weather is hot, it is suggested to carry things like a blazer separately and wear it on reaching the venue.
