Nature of work
Sales and marketing are interdependent functions. Marketing is a business activity used for marketing of goods, consumer durables, industrial goods, services, financial services, computing, travel, education, media, exports etc. Marketing involves market research & analysis, product development, pricing, promotion and sales forecasting.
Sales executives are responsible for establishing the market net work for a product. Sales managers assess and fix sales targets and work out strategies for its implementation. They locate distributors, plan sale outlets, and establish business infrastructure. They execute orders and ensure proper supply and oversee retailing outlets for proper stocking and display.
Electronic Business would enhance marketing activities creating a world wide customer clientele.
Personal Qualities
Marketing managers must be effective communicators with interest in business , awareness of business at all levels - local , national and international . They should be perceptive of social, economic and political trends. They must have ability to take decisions, have skill of dealing with people along with perseverance. Leadership, ability to work as part of a team and the ability to interact and work with people from different cultures is required. Sales managers and executives require excellent peoples skills and must have initiative, enthusiasm and interest in details. Mature judgement and brain power is crucial for marketing success .
Entry Routes
Graduates in science,commerce/ economics and even humanities can opt to study management . Graduate course in business studies(BBS) has become a popular option as it provides a composite academic and practical training package. Students from a nonscience school background can enter as junior sales trainee after graduating in business studies.Another academic option for school leavers is the 5 year Masters in Management Studies(MMS) course . The Masters in Business Administration of 2 years duration(MBA)and is open to graduates from varied streams. Computer training in E- Business would best be pursued after graduation in subjects like business studies/ economics/ commerce or MBA .The study pattern for the coming decade must be a coordinated exercise in mastering computing skills for business application along with business related education for effective marketing management.
