Introduction

Material management function involves coordination of planning, sourcing, purchasing, moving, storing and controlling materials so as to provide product at the minimum cost. The significant contribution made by the materials manager in reducing materials cost helps to improve profitability and return on investments.

Material Manager

The people in materials department of an industry or commercial organization are - the materials manager assisted by stores manager, manager traffic, purchase manager, inventory control and information manager. When an industry has several divisions the materials director controls the work through divisional materials managers.

Ensuring proper storage norms are maintained

Disbursing materials as per requirement of the various units of the production line

Managing the production output

Dispatch to the sales division

Personal qualities

Orderly, good at keeping records, aware of products in the market and good observation are essential qualities. They should have good negotiating skills and a thorough knowledge of storage conditions of materials.

Entry route

MBA with specialization in materials management or an engineering degree with an additional qualification in materials is desirable for recruitment to junior and middle level positions.
