Internet of Things jobs poised to have a big year

• 2-minute read •
Tech had a banner year in 2016 in terms of jobs. Cybersecurity, IT and engineering all continued to grow as industries, and many tech employees got raises. So what’s in store for 2017?

In an article for Forbes, Mike Krell, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, predicts a good year for the Internet of Things (IoT) industry.

So, what exactly is IoT, and does it really have its own industry?

To answer the first question, IoT refers to the connection of devices and items (beyond the usual computers, smart phones and tablets) to the internet. This includes cars, headphones, kitchen appliances and heart monitors. Ultimately, we could find ourselves living in a world where anything that can be connected will be connected.
We’re already well on the way. Gartner, an analyst firm, says that by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices, while others predict that number to be much higher.

In his report for Forbes, Krell also makes predictions about specific aspects of IoT, such as IoT semiconductor and sensor volumes, smart home technology, security, and more. While demand for IoT may grow, he also warns that smaller platform providers could shut down or get swallowed up by bigger companies.

And to answer the second question, it sure looks like IoT has its own industry. Just search the thousands of job postings out there in this burgeoning field. And check out these five featured IoT jobs to see if you have the skills to land them.
