Computer and information systems managers (often called information technology managers or IT project managers) coordinate the work of computer professionals and help top managers make crucial business decisions. These individuals are an important part of the technology and administration of their company, and in some cases, they are top managers.

As most companies not only use technology, but also seek the latest breakthroughs, these key employees plan, coordinate and direct computer-related activities within a company. They also help determine their organization's technology goals and are responsible for implementing computer systems to meet those goals.

The work environment is often a comfortable and clean office. The use of laptops, the Internet and emails are very common as networks continue to expand and some employees work remotely.

On a daily basis, job duties might include analyzing their organization's computer needs and suggesting possible upgrades, managing the security of their organization's network and electronic documents and providing users with technical support for computer problems.

Along with staying abreast with advances in technology, other duties might include planning and directing the installation and upgrading of hardware and software, and also weighing the costs and benefits of a new project.

In addition, they might plan and direct the work of other IT professionals, including computer systems analysts, software developers, information security analysts and computer support specialists.

How to become a computer and information systems manager
Usually, a bachelor's degree in computer or information science and related work experience are needed to become a computer and information systems manager. Many also have a graduate degree. A master of business administration (MBA) is common and takes an additional two years to complete. The number of years of experience needed varies with the organization. Typically, smaller companies do not require as much as larger, more established companies.

Necessary skills include analytical, communication, leadership and decision-making skills.

The median annual wage for computer and information systems managers was $120,950 in May 2012, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), with an expected growth of 15% by 2022. Prospective students are encouraged to conduct independent research as salary potential and employment opportunities may vary depending on location, experience, education and other factors.
