Handling 'Why should we hire you?'



"Why should we hire you is an important question that could insure you get in or lose out. So it can't just be an extempore answer. You need to prepare yourself well by researching as well as introspecting to take that on.

Getting to that illusive interview meeting doesn’t guarantee a job. Rather, it’s just the beginning of the long-drawn process of taking you closer to your goal. So facing the interview is of prime importance. However, the most probable and obvious question asked by an interviewer is Why should we hire you? And bungling with this one could spell disaster. This one common question does need some preparation at your end.

The 'why should we hire you' question essentially tests your ability to sell yourself. First let's discuss some answers that’ll never work:

"I’m hard working: This alone wouldn’t help to promote your cause
"I’m good at this job: This lacks passion and purpose.
"I’ve experience working in a similar environment. Not good enough to be bought easily.

So, what needs to be done before you go for that interview? Remember, this cannot be an extempore answer. You need to prepare well in advance for this question, to have an edge. You have to present yourself in such a way that you seem indispensible to them and the one-stop solution to every problem. First, before you go, read the job description carefully and gauge whether you fit the role or not. Look at points emphasized and what’s required to get the job. List the requirements and figure out how well you match with the role. List your skills and key qualities sought by the employer. Take note of the personal traits that make you unique, i.e. your persona, energy level, people skills, working style, etc. Think of concrete examples of why your skills and accomplishments make you stand out.

While talking, be positive and reiterate your interest in the company and the position. Talk in depth about your accomplishments as this is the place to beat your drum. Always think of yourself as a product on sale and devise thoughts as to why a customer would like to buy you.

These tips might help you formulate your answer better.

Showcase your skills: Based on the goals of the company and yours, determine how your skills and experience are commensurate with these goals. Also, showcase your skill sets and stress on why and how you are best fitted for the role.
Figure out your goals: When you research the company and position, figure out the requirements. Also try to find out about the work culture. Mention your own values and how they match with the company's goals.
Show your interest in the position: Show your enthusiasm for the job and the company. Make it evident to the interviewer that you want the job.

This is usually the last question asked but it makes or breaks you. So, prepare well for it and rehearse your answer before you go. Always answer precisely, clearly and confidently. If an important point comes up during the interview, be prepared to adapt your answer accordingly. Be positive and open to ideas. For instance, if the interviewer stresses on a certain skill, mould your answer in that fashion sounding indispensible.Remember it’s not about what you want, but what they are looking for. So be flexible and speak appropriately.
