Introduction
Anthropology ('Anthro') is a study of universalities and uniqueness, a study of startling contrast and surprising similarity, a study of meaning and logic in what seems 'bizarre' according to Roger Keesing and Felix Keesing.
Human beings have undergone tremendous change, in physical characteristics as well as culturally and socially. Anthropologists study the origin and this evolutionary development and trace the factors which have brought about this change. They are concerned with the study of man in time and space. Anthropology has two principal focuses, human evolution and variation (physical as well as cultural).
Anthropological data is used for understanding of human relations in the transcultural, foreign relations, industrial relations, ethnic and racial influences, political administration, social welfare, education and public health.
Nature of Work
Study of Anthropology involves studying various dimensions of man's life and behaviour. Anthropologists pursue specialised branches. Some of the elementary branches are:
Physical anthropology
Physical anthropology is the study of the biological evolution of man - the physical differences between different races, human genetics, physiological adaptation and reaction to different physical environments. This study is applied to forensic or genetic study, in the medical field to the study of heredity and environment for interpreting cultural attitudes, and for health and nutrition for structuring health schemes. Anthropologists also address conservation issues related to the preservation of these species.
Archaeological anthropology
Archaeological Anthropology investigates and analyses the various remains of early human activity. The job involves digging up, identifying and classifying prehistoric relics, comparing them with material from other areas and determining the chronological sequences in which they occured.Archaeological anthropologists work on historical reconstruction of prehistoric cultures as well as contemporary societies.
Socio-cultural anthropology
Socio-cultural anthropologists also study both current and extinct societies.Their area of study involves historical, social and cultural understanding of specific societies - their traditions and values. They deal with the social and cultural groups and apply this knowledge for cross-cultural communcations and understanding cultural evolution of races.
Linguistic anthropology
Linguistic anthropology focuses on language to understand a society and its culture. It is important for understanding gender relations, education, and politics . Linguistic anthropologists study both unwritten and written languages.
Applied anthropology
Anthropology finds applications in planning and monitoring birth control and malnutrition programmes. It is concerned with growth, health, juvenile delinquency, agriculture, tribal welfare, rehabilitation and above all solving industrial problems of labour unrest.
Work Conditions
Personal QualitiesResearch work is carried on in educational libraries and in the field Fieldwork can be in difficult in remote areas Physically strenuous Difficult work environments and primitive living conditions Physical anthropologists work at excavation sites Long working hours Socio-cultural anthropologists work in corporate/consultancy offices
Job prospectsInterest in history, various cultures and customs of tribes and communities. Those working with Government organisations, demoographical and agricultural practices, tribal welfare and human resource development require a good language ability Logical mind and good memory Ability to work on a task far away in remote areas.
Study OptionsInternational organisations like WHO, UNICEF, UN volunteer programmes Non Government Organisations (NGO's) working for development of tribal areas/backward areas Medical research establishments working on nutrition/preventive medicine Human resources department of large firms Universities and museums Archaeological surveys & research Biological surveys Teaching Consulting firms Research institutes Corporations Government jobs for handling environmental issues Organisations dealing with historic and cultural variations of various nations.
Anthropologists come from humanities or science backgrounds, hence graduation can be pursued in both BSc/BA streams. These are 3 year courses followed by specialization at post graduation level.
