Interest in innovative scientific research, application of analytical and logical reasoning, brilliant scientific acumen and enduring research interest makes for a succesful genetic scientist.
Introduction
Genetic scientists study the genetic material DNA(deoxyri bonucleic acid) in cells of plants, animals and humans and carry out research on how characteristics are passed from one generation to another. The study of genetics deals with understanding the development and manipulation of gene structures.
The technological findings have helped in the scientific manipulation of genetic structure and consequently have led to finding cure to many diseases, increase of agricultural produce, and for solutions for environmental problems.
Nature of Work
Genetic scientists are involved in the following areas :
Genetic Engineering which involves manipulation of the gene structure by rearranging, altering or splicing. Gene splicing has been at the root of major discoveries in the treatment of genetic disorders as well as in the development of hybrid seeds and agricultural produce. The improvement in livestock is based on genetic research.
Cytogenetists study of cell structures and chromosomes.
Molecular genetics study protein molecules in the cell or the DNA.
Population genetists study breeding methods, mutation, and produce of farm animals.
Genetic counsellors study the family's medical history and assess the possible chances of disorders transmitted genetically and give advise based on scientific facts.
Work Conditions
Personal QualitiesWork is carried on in laboratories equipped with high tech microscopes, computers etc. Preparing reports & proposals for grant of funds for projects is time consuming. The job involves teamwork with scientists and communication with other laboratories for required support.
Job prospectsPatience and devotion to carry on research over long periods Brilliant mathematical and analytical skills Knowledge of the subject Progressive outlook ato keep pace with the rapid progress Patience, determination, and love for detail Discoveries require serious pursuit
Study OptionsResearch organisations conducting ongoing research in the field of medical sciences and agricultural sciences offer employment. National science and research organisations are allocating funds to finance research in this sector. In research and development in biochemistry and biochemical engineering and all areas where these processes are implied. In departments of institutions In industries for production of antimicrobial agents, reagents and consumables. In marketing of instruments used in biotechnological applications and research In developing business in the sector where biotechnological products would be most required In industries producing food, chemicals, bio-processed products etc. Industrial R&D covers areas such as chemical processes, increase in productivity, waste and pollution management. In the identification of biotechnological development opportunities for the industry in India and abroad. In Environmental biotechnology to resolve crisis related to marine life, depletion of the atmosphere etc. Government labs. Both technical and managerial positions in the private sector In academics in departments of marine biotech, biomedicine, earth sciences biomedical engineering, agricultural and environmental biotechnology etc.
Students interested in pursuing genetic science may pursue the subject at the graduate and postgraduate level before enrolling for a research assignment. Human Biology is also an interesting option offered to students after Class XII at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
